This course is designed to give a basic introduction to fundamental concepts, methods and techniques of operations research (OR). The topics include definition of OR, scope of OR, the OR problem solving process, models and modeling in OR, model formulations of linear programming (LP), the graphical method and the Simplex method for solving LP problems, special cases of LP problems, definitions of the dual problem, primal dual relationship, economic interpretation of duality, dual simplex method, sensitivity or post optimal analysis, determination of starting solutions and solution of transportation problems, special cases of transportation problems, Hungarian method and an application of the assignment problem, project scheduling with certain activity time and time/ cost trade OR in PERT/ CPM networks.

This course emphasizes understanding, interpreting statistical information and using it to form sound judgments in business situations. In addition to descriptive level data analysis, it includes data analysis techniques such as ANOVA, Regression, and Non-Parametric methods. Statistical software will be used to perform data analysis using these techniques.

This course provides the student with the underlying principles and techniques of Total Quality Management (TQM) with emphasis on using quality as a strategic tool to gain competitive advantage. It emphasizes the importance of embedding TQM into the organizational culture. Topics covered include a historical perspective on quality, teachings of quality “gurus”, TQM models, standards, and implementation guidelines, application of Six Sigma and quality awards.
